Cards Advices

The following sets out all the necessary information for the security of your BCGE card transactions:

For your security, adopt the right habits

For the safe use of your debit cards (BCGE Maestro card) and/or your credit cards (BCGE Visa card or MasterCard), the following basic rules should be applied:
  • Note down the number of your card and the emergency telephone number in the event of the card being lost or stolen. Keep these numbers separately from your card and save them on your mobile phone.
  • Never keep your PIN code with your card and do not even write it down in any form whatsoever. Memorise it and do not communicate it to anyone under any circumstances.
  • Do not choose a PIN code which could easily be guessed (date of birth, registration number, etc).
  • During a transaction, never let yourself be distracted. Do not accept help from strangers.
  • When keying in your PIN code, shield from any prying eyes. Place one hand above the keyboard to prevent your code being filmed.
  • Do not forget where your card is, never lend it and keep it in a safe place.
  • After a transaction, do not forget to take your card and your receipt.
  • If your card gets blocked, refuse help from any unknown person and notify the bank at once.
  • Use personal data with the utmost care, i.e. the number of your credit card, its expiry date, or its CVV/CVC1 code. In no circumstances should you communicate these details in e-mails or non-secure web forms (https). Do not mention them in documents sent by post, even if you have been given assurance that the card will not be debited.
  • For internet purchases, activate the 3-D Secure function on your credit card
  • Regularly check your card invoices and transaction statements. If you detect any anomalies, ask for your card to be blocked immediately.

(1) The CVV (Code Verification Value) and CVC (Card Verification Code) are security codes comprising a series of three figures which appear on the back of your credit card. These codes enable you to confirm that you are in possession of your card when conducting online transactions.

Simple steps to protect your cards

The magnetic strip on the back of your card can be damaged when the card is close to an electromagnetic field. This means that there is a risk of the information required to validate payment being deleted (demagnetisation). If this happens, your card may not be accepted by an ATM or a payment terminal.

To avoid all risk of demagnetisation, it is advisable never to keep your bank cards close to:
  • mobile phones
  • magnetic fastenings on handbags or beltbags
  • televisions or any equipment incorporating speakers
  • magnetic plates which form part of store check-out points (used to remove anti-theft tags)
  • any other equipment containing a magnet (paper clip holder, ski rack, etc.)

In all cases, demagnetisation only destroys the magnetic strip: the details regarding the account remain unimpaired.
A number of precautions also need to be taken to ensure that your card works properly:
  • avoid scratching or bending the magnetic strip
  • keep your card flat, in a protective case
  • do not keep it back-to-back with another card
  • do not expose it to the sun
  • n• never let it come into contact with metallic objects (keys, coins, etc.)
