Your computer protection

Install internet security software (antivirus, firewall, etc.)

  • Antivirus and protection against malicious programmes (malware)
This type of protection analyses, hunts down and removes malicious programmes (malware) which is a generic term covering the malicious devices on the internet, such as computer viruses, spyware, adware, Trojan horses, worms, etc.
  • Filter between the internet and your computer (Firewall)
This function protects your computer by analysing current traffic and refusing unwanted visitors. Without a firewall, your computer can be interrogated and visited tens of times a day without your knowledge.
  • Internet site analysis and filtering
This type of protection enables you to ensure greater security of your online financial transactions because the sites visited or retrieved are analysed, with the result that you are protected against malware risks which might spread via these sites and against the techniques which redirect you towards fake websites more effectively.
  • E-mail analysis and filtering
This type of protection is essential for any e-mail user: it will give you better protection against junk mail, spam mail and viruses and other malware propagation via e-mail.

Perform regular checks on your computer using your internet security software

Analysing and protecting your computer is essential:
  • protect your computer by installing a recent internet protective software programme
  • run the automatic internet protection software updates (default setting)
  • run an analysis of your computer (default setting) to diagnose it.

Only install reliable programmes

  • If you have downloaded programmes online, ensure that the company and the site used are known and reliable.
  • For in-store purchases, ensure that the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM comes with the publisher’s certificate and buy from a store which is known and serious.
  • Some online companies use questionable business practices and offer to install their software for you in order to “optimise your computer’s performance”, “secure your transactions”, etc. Systematically refuse these offers whose whole objective is to install, unbeknown to you, spyware or junk programmes on your computer. As described in the “Install internet security software” section, your internet protection software will guarantee your computer’s security.
  • A huge choice of illegal downloads is offered online. Nowadays, most viruses and malware are transmitted in this type of file. Do not download or install this type of file because your computer could be infected by these malware programmes which your internet protection software is unable to detect.

Keep your computer, web browser and internet protection software updated

Do no communicate your access codes to anybody

  • In particular, do not write your password or your user number on your BCGE Netbanking card: in the event of loss or theft, a third party would have access to your codes.
  • Keep your BCGE Netbanking cards in a safe place
  • Do not cross out the codes of your card once they have already been used
  • Choose passwords that are difficult to guess: incorporate figures and letters, capitals and lower case
  • Avoid passwords that a third party could link with you (date of birth, phone number, children’s names, etc.)
  • Never use a password that you already use on another website
  • Change your password regularly (every 3 months)
